NASCAR INSIDER FLOATS NAMES FOR POTENTIAL THIRD RICHARD CHILDRESS RACING CUP CAR

It’s been a wild season in NASCAR and the offseason already promises to be even more intriguing, with the closure of Stewart-Haas Racing and the retirement of Martin Truex Jr. opening up the possibility for plenty of seats to change going forward.

Already Chase Briscoe has been selected to fill the chair of Truex for Joe Gibbs Racing, giving JGR a full four-man team again.

But other teams could also look to potentially add drivers. One such team is Richard Childress Racing, which is having a bit of a tough year so far.

Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch are both already signed to RCR for at least another year, and both are expected to remain with the organization even though there have been rumblings of discontent with Busch during a very trying campaign.

Busch is currently outside the playoff points cut line, trailing both Bubba Wallace and Briscoe, in order, below the cut line. He’s in 17th place in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings.

Dillon is having an even tougher year, sitting in 32nd in points.

FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass is floating the idea of an expanded team for Richard Childress Racing in NASCAR’s Cup Series. Could a third driver potentially be added?

Here’s what Pockrass had to say:

“The team had flirted with adding a third full-time car for next year but that seems less likely now than a month ago with the news that Gene Haas is keeping one of his charters. If they can obtain a charter, Noah Gragson could be a possibility with his Bass Pro relationship, which already is strong at RCR with the No. 3 car. Austin Hill could also be a possibility, but he seems content to run in Xfinity next season.”

Gragson is currently doing a little better than Dillon in the Cup Series points standings, sitting at 25th overall. He doesn’t have a win this year, though, and has only one top-five finish.

Hill, meanwhile, has been a mainstay in the Xfinity Series. He’s currently in fourth in the NASCAR Xfinity Series point standings, while he has won two races and finished with seven top-fives.

Point being there would be some quality options for Richard Childress Racing in the event it looked to add a third seat this offseason.
