PENGUINS SEND MULTIPLE PLAYERS TO AHL FOR PLAYOFFS
PITTSBURGH – With the season over for the Pittsburgh Penguins at the NHL level, their American Hockey League affiliate is set to begin a playoff run. Game 1 for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins is still being figured out, but they are getting reinforcements from the NHL roster.
As locker cleanout day drew to an end, the Penguins re-assigned forwards Valtteri Puustinen and Radim Zohorna, as well as defenseman Jack St. Ivany to the AHL.
The WBS Penguins put together a great season in 2023-24, finishing third in the Atlantic Division with a 38-23-9 record. Led by All-Rookie goalie Joel Blomqvist in net, the WBS Penguins look forward to a prosperous postseason run.
Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan praised multiple players who played in both the NHL and AHL this season.
“There was a number of them that got NHL time and opportunity to play,” Sullivan said. “These guys have helped Wilkes-Barre have a successful season down there. It’s great that they’ve got an opportunity to play in a high-stakes environment.”
The Penguins have gotten good use out of their AHL squad all season long, from brief recalls to building toward the NHL and even conditioning stints. The partnership between the NHL and AHL Penguins has been crucial, and keeping up with how the Baby Pens perform in the postseason will be vital to the future.
