WHY'D COMMANDERS SIGN NOTRE DAME QB SAM HARTMAN TO 'BIG CONTRACT'?

The term "big contract'' is a relative thing, but that is the phrase being used to describe what the Washington Commanders just did with their new rookie QB.

No, not quarterback of the future from the 2024 NFL Draft Jayden Daniels, grabbed with the second overall pick.

It was after the draft concluded when the Commanders moved to sign another quarterback, this time via the undrafted free agent market.

One of the top available quarterbacks as a UDFA for certain was Notre Dame's Sam Hartman, and now he's a Commander.

Washington gave him a base salary of $225,000, fairly pricy for a UDFA ... and a number to speaks to how much the team likes him.

Does it come with some super-guarantee of success? Of course not; if Hartman was "that guy,'' he would've been drafted.

But we like to call it "dart-throwing'' ... our mindset being that if a team somehow hits a bull's eye at QB, it's invaluable - so why not throw a few extra darts at the position.

Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett are gone. Washington has completely remade the room now, with Daniels, and then Marcus Mariota, Jeff Driskel, and Jake Fromm - and now another "dart'' - on their roster.
