PIRATES FALL SHORT IN 10TH INNING AGAINST CARDINALS ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

The Pittsburgh Pirates were defeated 3-2 by the St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings on the Fourth of July after Dennis Santana surrendered a pair of runs in the extra frame at PNC Park.

Automatic runner Michael Siani advanced to third when José Fermín opened the top of the 10th with a ground out to second base. Pedo Pagés followed by doubling past the outstretched glove of center fielder Michael A. Taylor. Two batters later, Alec Burleson looped a single into shallow left field off of Santana (2-1).

A day after rallying for the win in the bottom of the 10th, the Pirates (41-45) were unable to overcome the deficit against John King.

Automatic runner Michael A. Taylor scored — from second base — on a Nick Gonzales flyball to left-center to bring the Pirates within a run. King (3-1) retired Andrew McCutchen with two on for the final out.

Martín Pérez worked into the eighth inning for the second time this season, giving the Pirates 7.1 innings of great work. The veteran left-hander held the Cardinals (45-41) to a lone run on six hits. He walked one and struck out a pair.

The Cardinals jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning. Pérez missed the bag covering first base on a grounder to Rowdy Tellez off the bat of Brendan Donovan, leaving the door open with two outs. Dylan Carlson capitalized on the miscue and plated Donovan with a double to left.

Pérez escaped a big jam in the sixth inning. The Cardinals opened the inning with back-to-back singles, setting up runners on the corners with nobody out. Pérez induced a 5-4-3 double play to keep Masyn Winn at third base and struck out Paul Goldschmidt to escape unscathed.

Like Pérez, Cardinals starter Andre Pallante also had a strong start. The right-hander tossed a career-high seven innings, allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out five.

Bryan Reynolds slugged a solo homer off of Pallante into the bushes in center field to even the score 1-1. It was Reynolds’ team-leading 14th homer of the season.
