LEITER OPTIONED, WHITE UP

The Texas Rangers have optioned Jack Leiter to AAA Round Rock. To take his place on the active roster, the Rangers have recalled pitcher Owen White from AAA Round Rock.

Leiter was called up just to make one spot start, and the expectation was that he would be sent back down after that start so the Rangers could add another arm to the bullpen mix. At this point, the only healthy pitchers on the forty man roster who could be added to take the place of a pitcher who was sent down, rather than being put on the injured list, are Owen White and Jonathan Hernandez.

I had assumed that Hernandez, who is on a rehab stint with Round Rock, would be activated from the injured list to take White’s place. However, Hernandez pitched last night for Round Rock — his seventh appearance for the Express — and so instead of Hernandez, White is up.

White is in the pen to provide innings in case of an emergency. He had an underwhelming spring training and has a 7.30 ERA in 12 innings over three starts for Round Rock.
