CARDINALS WIN IN EXTRA INNINGS, TAKE SERIES FROM PIRATES

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 in extra innings on Thursday. The team took two of three games this week at PNC Park and have won the series.

Here is what you need to know from Thursday's contest

Pallante Shines Again

After throwing five shut-out innings over the weekend against the Cincinnati Reds, Cardinals pitcher Andre Pallante continued to shine with another great start on Thursday.

The 25-year-old went seven full innings in the series finale and allowed only one run to score on four hits. Pallante recorded five strikeouts in the outing. His ERA has dropped 123 points over his last two starts and now sits at 4.00 on the season.

Cardinals Get Two in the Tenth

After only bringing in one run in extra innings in last night's game that resulted in a loss, the Cardinals doubled down with two runs in the top of the tenth inning on Thursday.

In scoring started with an RBI double by Cardinals catcher Pedro Pagés, bringing in Michael Siani to take the lead. They would add one more insurance run with a bloop to left field by Alec Burleson to bring in Pagés.

The lead would hold as the Pirates could only score one in the bottom of the tenth inning. Alec Burleson now has 17 RBIs in the last 15 days, which leads all batters in the National League over that span.

Bullpen Was Great

The entire pitching staff did great for the Cardinals in the series finale on Thursday. After Pallante finished his seven strong innings, St. Louis Manager Oli Marmol called on two relievers to finish the game.

Andrew Kittridge came in for the Redbirds in the eighth inning and recorded three strikeouts. John King finished the game for St. Louis including work in extra innings. King was awarded his third win of the season after successfully holding the Pirates to zero earned runs across the final two innings of the game.

What's Next

The Cardinals will travel to the nation's capital to take on the Washington Nationals for a four-game series beginning on Friday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:45 PM EST.
