Langer is 66 years old and in Munich, just 100 kilometers from his hometown Anhausen, he will play his 513th and final match, thus closing an important chapter in a 50-year career.
Langer won 42 times on what was then the European Tour, second only to Seve Ballesteros, who tops the list with 50 wins. The German has also won three times on the PGA TOUR and is one of only five players to have won professional events on all six continents where golf is played.
Twice champion at the Augusta Masters (1985 and 1993) he was the first world number one in this sport when the Official World Golf Ranking was introduced in 1986. And if all this wasn't enough, he is also the one with the most successes in history of golf over 50, having won a record 12 Senior Major Championships and over 50 titles in total, including a record 46 victories on the PGA TOUR Champions.
He has played in the Ryder Cup ten times, winning five, and was captain of Europe in 2004. One last curiosity that further testifies to Langer's exceptional nature: since he turned 64 in 2021 he has shot fewer shots than his age 15 times...
His last race will start on Thursday and in Germany they have organized everything perfectly. It will be his celebration in Monaco and he will play the first two rounds - hoping that they will not be the last and that he will pass the cut to also play at the weekend - alongside two good German friends of his, Martin Kaymer and Marcel Siem who last week won his sixth Italian Open title.
Langer's emotion is evident: "I have never said goodbye to anything before in golf, this will be the first experience and I have the feeling that it will be very emotional. It means a lot to me to play in front of my home crowd.
I hope to be able to overcome the cut, but the field is much longer than it used to be and this presents a challenge for me. As I get older, the field is getting longer, and this is not a good combination." : “I grew up about 45 minutes from here.
